Qanuininnirmut Ikajuqtiit – Inuit Community Support Worker & Management Trainee Program

The Qanuininnirmut Ikajuqtiit, Inuit Community Support Worker and Management Trainee program is a two-year training and work experience program.  The program is funded through the Government of Canada’s Skills and Partnership Fund with the intention of increasing Inuit representation in the social service workforce.

The Qanuininnirmut Ikajuqtiit program runs in two cohorts, with students in Ottawa, Iqaluit and other communities in the Qikiqtani region. Year one of the program, began September 2018, and consisted of training modules, delivered mostly online, with learning supports and in-person training taking place at 1071 Richmond Rd for the Ottawa students and ilinniapaa Skills Development Centre for the Nunavut students. Year two of the program, which began September 2019, has the students completing a series of work placements at various Inuit serving organizations in Ottawa and Nunavut communities.

What makes this particular program unique is that an attempt has been made to remove barriers that stop many people from pursuing post-secondary education. For example, the majority of the training is available online, allowing students to work on their own schedule. A laptop is provided to all students to access the learning modules. Transportation and childcare funding is available to students as needed. All students receive a training allowance during year one of the program and the placement opportunities in year two are all paid.
