INUKTITUT LANGUAGE

Language plays a fundamental, sustaining role in Inuit culture. This is especially true because the oral culture of Inuit relies heavily upon the traditional language-Inuktitut. Inuktitut is characterized as a descriptive language. Bilingual Inuit (Inuktitut and English) describe it as "very honest," "to the point" and "direct". An Inuk speaking English will often express themselves according to the patterns of Inuktitut speech; this may sound blunt or abrupt to someone who does not understand these differences.

There are many dialects used by Inuit from the different regions across Canada. Despite these differences, Inuit are able to communicate with each other in Inuktitut and understand one another. In Ottawa, with Inuit moving from various regions in the north, a unique dialect is evolving that is reflective of this particular region.

Tungasuvvingat Inuit programming includes the active use of Inuktitut both written and oral. The promotion of language in all program areas fosters the ability for Inuit to continue to use their language, and it allows those who would like to learn Inuktitut opportunity to hear & learn from other community members.

To build on language retention and learning, TI has developed a resource CD. The CD provides individuals the opportunity to continue learning Inuktitut on their own and at their own pace. If you are interested in the language CD please contact Jason LeBlanc - Operations Director at 613-747-2225 for further information.
